Why I Sleep Out...

Reggie's Sleepout Des Moines 2017 Honorary Chair, Jack Hatch

I never met Reggie Kelsey but as a state senator, I was honored to floor manage legislation that allowed foster kids to extend their Medicaid benefits to age 21. You see, Reggie "aged out" of foster care at the age of 18. Homeless and without support, he took his own life. Today, Iowa has come a long way to help foster kids avoid being homeless. But not everyone is helped and that's why this fundraiser is important. I hope you will join me and Iowa Homeless Youth Centers as we sleep under the stars to help kids reach them on Saturday, October 21st at Drake Stadium.

- Jack Hatch, 2017 Honorary Chair

Each year, Iowa Homeless Youth Centers helps over 600 transition-age youth (16-22) who are at-risk or are currently experiencing homelessness. Learn more about how IHYC helps by visiting our website at
